Nerdy time lost and found

2011-05-18 3:03pm

May has been CHAOS!! Before knowing i was getting screwed by COL, i committed to renting out a room so i could use it for fun. So i’m paying rent twice now. It won’t be for another couple of months before that’s paying me back, but at least i have a future and a plan for that. with this much visibility, that’s all the info you get, until i build a private blog feature into this site. just one of about a buhzillions idea i’ve been jotting down for this site, as well as other projects. Currently, i’m in the process of installing packages on the new server. Then i’ll move this site, as well as subverter.net. It’ll be nice being able to stretch out with double the memory available to me. So anyways. What’s been happening with me? Madukes came to town last week. I saw Cattle Decapitation and Asesino in Ventura the other night. I’m a week away from harvesting my sorry plants that were moved 3 times. And i’m back to the consultant/contractor game. Santa Barbara is fucking expensive. So anyways. until next time. Keep those trichs abundant!

Fuck work

2011-04-28 4:40pm

More specifically, FUCK Citrix and “their new direction”. I’m sure what that means is “we decided to give your job to someone else; they just doesn’t know it yet.”. I wasted the last 4 years of my life juggling several different hats in my measly role as a customer support rep. Everything from billing, to full on API support, to actual coding. I shit you not. Citrix Online uses Ingred on their citrixgcs.com and g2help.com website, because i fucking put it there. It’s on! I just bought a new server, and got killaphantom upped to 1gb of RAM. My new goal is just to go ahead with what i was going to do, but 3rd party, and pure profit. Stay tuned.

A better line-in solution

2011-04-27 5:30pm

JACK is the shit. It takes sound, and routes it. In my case, i wanted my line-in to just simply be routed to my speakers. I then found Rackarrack, which has a really useful equalizer, amongst all the other fun filters. It was originally designed as a guitar rack. But you should never take a something at face value. Just wanted to post this real quick. I have a really shitty record player, and plan to write some articles about it, in an up and coming “I void warranties” regular. details about that, coming up. stay tuned.

Northern Lights #5 x Haze

2011-04-20 4:20am

One of the traditions i’m going to start with this date, is to procure new genetics to add into my garden. Last year, i bought Satori from Mandala Seeds, which is one of my favorite strains that i grow right now. This year, i chose Northern Lights #5 x Haze from Sensi Seeds, because it’s the same story as with the Satori seed. I got hold of some her flowers, and that experience stayed with me. I was introduced in 2008, when the gf and i went on a trip to San Francisco, to scope out the scene. I’m not going to pop this bean sprout just yet, though. I am in the process of phasing out genetics, and would like to save her for a dedicated grow space. So that’s all for now. until next time, keep those trichs abundant (i think that might become my thing to say on my way out. for these kinds of posts)

Happy April 20th

Yes. I admit it. I enjoy a better quality of life, thanks to the medical benefits of cannabis. I live in California, and i like to think of myself as being compliant with local, and state laws. In any event, Today is a stoner holiday, that really confuses me. 420 is supposed to mean “busted”, which is an unavoidable topic, unfortunately. So, whatever. Stoner culture is pretty new to me, so i guess i still have a lot to learn. But, on that topic, i also have a lot to share, so I have decided that this needs to be a regular topic. However, just to be safe. Anything i share is for educational, and entertainment purposes only. You know the drill. I don’t condone illegal behavior, and i can’t be blamed for my actions, let alone yours. So now that we’ve got that out of the way, on to the good stuff.

Under state law, the California Compassionate Use Act of 1996 (Prop. 215) patients are protected from criminal prosecution under state law for personal possession and cultivation of marijuana. If you live in the Unites States, you probably live in a state that has a medical marijuana program. For now, i’m going to be lazy and say that if you don’t, you should probably head over to Americans for Safe Access and start a chapter in your city, when you get a chance.

Spring cleaning

Alright. Enough is enough. For years, i’ve been able to run my services off 256mb of ram. But that has not been the case, since updating to a more modern operating system. Before the whole virtualization thing had taken off, i was paying $400 a year for Virtuozzo hosting from a random reseller called HostForWeb. They were good enough. But they never kept up with the rest of the world, so after about 3 years of that shit, i started hearing about services like MediaTemple, but ultimately moved to Slicehost, and switched over to Ubuntu from FreeBSD.

Boy do i miss FreeBSD. With my first server i installed everything from source, which tooks DAYS. I’m less patient, now, so i used Apt. Which i’m finding was a mistake. After installing everything, i noticed that space was really tight with memory. If there was any interest in anything, say an email conversation, or some visits on a web page that needed to talk to mysql, i was guaranteed some out of memory messages from various logs. Eventually i got fed up with that, and decided to move DNS to a dedicated machine. It had to be done, anyways.

All’s been well, and is well, provided i don’t ask for too much from a PHP script (which is to be expected, anyways). However, i still am not satisfied with that, because i’ve always known that my MTA, and all of it’s accessories (ClamAV, SpamAssasin, etc) are using over 40% of my RAM. To me, that’s pretty significant for what i consider a web server.

I’d love to try and get things back to the way they were, so i want to try and install everything from source. While i’m slimming down, i may also end up moving into a xen stack, at prgmr.com. They (being a one a man show, it would seem) seem to be very transparent, and more importantly offer the flexibility i want, not to mention the fact that they offer the same service for 12 bucks cheaper. What’s more, since i currently run my DNS service off a virtualized FreeBSD in Xen, i’m confident i’ll be able to do the same. I’ll probably rant and rave about my decision again once the transition is complete. but for now. i have to get started on the transition plan.

Generally when i do this, i set up everything once in a virtual environment and then make sure to take extensive notes, so i don’t fuck shit up on a live service. once i’ve got that under my belt, it’ll be time to purchase the server. Rest assured, you’ll see my plan notes pop up somewhere on this site. That’s what it’s here for. So first thing’s first. I need to find a virtualization platform. All of my cool boxes have been in neglect, and so currently, i’m using a Mac Mini, as my main computer. I’m still new to the Apple camp, so i find myself reaching out for known solutions left over from when Debian Sarge, or Ubuntu was my main operating system. So i’m going to see if i can find a recent VirtualBox build for Mac. Should be good. Stay tuned.

Hollar.

On the subject of tags as navigation

2011-03-10 7:04am

So, in the interest of spending less time “creating a new section”, and “adding a post to that new section”, my original idea for organizing pages on the site, was to tag everything. I always figured that posts with a “Destruction” tag could also include a few topic-like tags such as “admin” and “php”, to help with tying posts together. Navigation, and breadcrumbs could be determined by weight. when you have 4 pages all sharing the same tag, such as “Destructions”, then you can display suggestions on where to go next. We’ll have to see how this works out.

So, how about some automation?

2011-03-10 6:39am

Consider this my first of many todo lists.

  1. use git, to track changes.
  2. Determine a way to deploy git project to live site.
  3. Build a database to hold on to these articles
  4. Work on this fugly design.
  5. Implement tags for rudimentary organization of posts.

We're Live!

Never got around to that Satori, but i’m on a roll. Time to work on the About page, where you can go to read about what this site is all about, which i’ll tell you now, isn’t a big deal. i plan to to just simply document my activities with the site, as well as other projects.

Goodnews, Everybody!

2011-03-10 5:36am

This is unusual for me. I hacked together the new burden.cc in about 2 hours using Sleepy for a router, Blueprint for the layout, and these posts are written in Textile because that’s what i’m used to. Time to light up some Satori and get this live. See you on burden.cc!!

Hello World
